th is occurrence, the art o f etching has b y fome o f his pupils been affiduouily cultiva ted;
and th e author prefumes, that T ie.E n gU Jh E n tom o lo g i/l} T h e W o rk-o n S p id ers-, and the
etchings o f feveral v iews o f different i& n d s in the South Seas, together w ith a variety
o f other performances w h ich already have or foon w il l be publiflied, afford pleafing and
fatisfaCtory teftimonies o f their merits in that department.
H a v in g fo lo ng laboured w itli patience and p e rfe ve ran c e Jn this arduous enterprife,
and having fun k in it no inconliderable ffiare o f a private competence, the author ha s at
length the Angular gratification o f feeing his mo ft fanguine expectations realifed b y the
event; and an animating profpeCt now begins to open upon him, th a t'his academy w il l
continue to rife in th e e ftim a tion of. mankind b y the production o f w o rk s f t ill more
important to the illuftration o f the different kingdoms o f nature, and b y g iv ing that
extenfion to the circle o f the p olite arts, w h ich it is hoped w ill redound to the credit •
and honour o f the countiy where this eftablifliment has been firft formed. '
I n thus alluding to the lofs w h ich his p rivate fortune has fuftained in his ex ertions for
the public benefit o f fcience, h e has not been actuated b y any motive o f oftentation. H e
