 N  the  greateft pertedlion  in  fir plantations;  in  other  
 places  commonly  varying  to Bnlliard's  A. dulcis t. 224,  
 and  A.  vinofus  t.  54.  The  whole  plant  is  of  a reddifli  
 cinnamon  colour,  the  pileus  reddeft.  The  lamellce  
 join the ñipes in nearly a ftraight line  ; the milk is commonly  
 mild,  but  leaves  a  roughifli  acrid  tafte  in  the  
 throat.  Bulcis  is a poor  variety, and  vino/us is  found  in  
 oak  and other woods  like  a ñrayed plant.  This  Agaric  
 has  fomething  of  an  oily  fmell,  and  fomewhat  rancid  
 tafte.  It  is brittle,  and eafily crumbles under the  touch.

 O  be  known  from  the  laft in  the  younger  ftate  by  
 its  cobweb-like  annulus ;  afterwards  by  the gills  as it  
 were  rounded  oif  from  the  ftipes,  .which  is  yellower,  
 fomewhat  ftriated;  and  by  its  breaking  into  clefts  at  
 the  edge.

 he  neighbourhood  of  Newmarket,  CambriTgeto  
 It  appears  an undefcribed  fpecies,  and  is paraiiLS  on  
 bafe with  a  rigid  woolly  fubftance like  fpurs, above  it  
 IS downy.  The  gills  partly  rounding  from  he  ftl  
 or  pileus  nearly  white.  The  pileus  almoft  r e g u X

 _ V  ARYING,  fwelling in wet,  twifting and diftorting  
 «cryweather.  The lamelte are  ftraight  from the edgf  
 of  the  pileus  to  the  ftem,  or decurrent,  always  copioufly  
 covered  with  a farinaceous  pinky  powder,  moft  
 confpicuous  when  the  fungus  is  drying.  It  often  resembles  
 the bleached varieties of A. amethyjiinus, which  
 lias  occaiioned  fome confufion.
