XVUl EXPLANATION OP NAMES AND TERMS.
UMao or Uhiyow; a populous district about 8° south latitude, and not
far from the east coast.
Uhia or Mohia ; a province between Karague and Victoria Nyanza.
TJgogo ; a dry plateau land in Central Africa, a t 6 |° south latitude.
U tum b i; an extensive province to the south-west of Unyoro.
U s u i; a district south of Karague, dreaded by traders and travellers on
account of its extortionate sultan.
Verembe ; the expression used by natives of Karague when they meet.
I t corresponds with our “ How do you do ? ”
Vitokeh ; plantain-trees are called by this name in Uganda.
W a tu ta ; a plundering, restless race, supposed to be a branch from the
Zulu Kaffirs of th e Cape. They have spread as far north at 3^° south
latitude.
Wezee ; a short expression for the people who live in Unyamuezi.
Wazoongoo; the term applied to white men. A white man is called
M’zoongoo.
Wahuma ; the reigning races of Usui, Karague, Uganda, Unyoro, &c.
Wazeewa ; a race from Uhia, living upon th e banks of the Kitangule.
W a tu s i; a race of cowherds, who are scattered on either side of the
equator, and who resemble the Somali in appearance.
Yanee ; a monkey, said to be so vicious th a t he will return a spear if
thrown a t him.

On the 30th of April 1860, Captain Speke and I
embarked at Plymouth on board H.M.’s steam-ship
Forte, 51 guns, bearing the flag of Admiral the Hon.
Sir Henry Keppel, K.C.B., and commanded by Captain
Gr. W. Tumour. Generally speaking, few persons care
to hear details of a voyage to the Cape, although, in a
frigate with 640 souls on board, a greater variety of
incident as well as interest might be expected t h a n i n an
ordinary sailing-vessel. Eight days passed smoothly;
on the ninth day we gladly stepped on shore to enjoy
the bright island of Madeira, with its scented shrub-
