The la tte r variety, th e ty p e of which is in th e B ritish
Museum, p re sented by th e Church Missionary Society,
differs from th e u su al form only in being of a more rounded
shape. Although Zelandica was described seven years
previous to oblonga it is advisable to re ta in th e la tte r name
because the shells to which it is applied are of th e common
form of th e species, and also because th e former name lias
been used already b y Quoy an d Gaiinard for another
specie,s, and a lthough th is is a synonym of Venus Stutch-
bnrii. Gray, nevertheless for th e foregoing reasons it
c erta in ly is preferable to re ta in th e name oblonga.

As surmised by Von Martens, List Mollusca New Ze a l,
p. 46, th e re can be no doubt of th e id en tity of th e above
two species, for on comparing th e a ctual types, both of
which axe in th e Museum collection, n o t the slightest
difterence is traceable. Fig. 3 on pi. 3 appears to represent
a species of th is genus in te rm ed ia te between reflexa and
V. Siliqua, Desìi,, which differs chiefly from th e former in
lieing of a more elongated form.

The above appears to be b u t a manuscript name attached
to specimens in the British Museum and Cumingian collections,
and I re ta in i t as c ertain characters observable in
th e New Zealand shells may be sufficient to distinguish
th em from those occurring in South A u stra lia (S. Australis,
Lamarck).
The form of th e two species is very similar and the
character of the epidermis alike, except th a t th a t of
Parksonii is ra th e r darker and sometimes marked with
in te rru p ted rays of black. B u t the cliief differences are to
be observed within.
In S. Aus tra lis there exists in each valve a single
cardinal tooth, or b e tte r callosity, broad and spreading at
th e dorsal margin of the valve and gradually th in n in g as
i t ' extends arenately into i t ; behind this callosity towaixls
th e anterior end or longer portion of the shell there is a
th in ra th e r broadish lobe-like e.xpausion of th e ligament
placed in a corresponding shallow depression.
The posterior muscular scar is roundly pear-shaped.
I n S. Parkinsonii the denta l callosity is moderately broad
and produced acutely towards th e shorter or posterior side
of th e valve and not tru n c a ted as in Australis, the extension
of it witliiii the valve is th in nearly separated from it
a t th e base by a depression ; th e transverse expansion of
the ligament is elongate and n an-ow; the posterior muscular
scar is narrower th an in th e A ustralian species.
These differences are quite constant in tlie^ twenty
examples of Parkinsonii and four of Au stra lis which have
been examined.
