riffe, to get a fupply of thefe, and of the ufual refreihments
for ourfelves; thinking that ifland, for fuch purpofes, better
adapted than Madeira. At four in the afternoon of the
31ft, we faw Teneriffe, and fleered for the eaflern part. At
nine, being near it, we hauled up, and flood off and on
during the night.
At day-light, on the morning o f the ift of Auguft, we
failed round the Eaft Point of the ifland; and, about eight
o’clock, anchored on the South Eaft fide of it, in the Road
of Santa Cruz, in twenty-three fathoms water j the bottom,
fand and owze. Punta de Nago, the Eaft point of the Road,
bore North 64° Eaft; St. Francis’s church, remarkable for its
high fteeple, Weft South Weft; the Pic, South 65° Weft;
and the South Weft point of the Road, on which ftands a
fort or caftle, South 39“ Weft. In this fituation, we moored
North Eaft and South Weft, with a cable each way, being
near half a mile from the ihore.
We found, riding in this Road, La Bouflole, a French frigate,
commanded by the Chevalier de Borda; two brigantines
of the fame nation; an Engliih brigantine from London,
bound to Senegal ; and fourteen fail of Spaniih veffels.
No fooner had we anchored, than we were vifited by the
Mailer o f the Port, who fatisfied himfelf with aiking the
fhip’s name. Upon his leaving us, I fent an officer affiore,
to prerent my refpefts to the Governor; and to aik his leave
to take in water, and to purchafe fuch articles as we were
in want of. All this he granted with the greateft politenefs;
and, foon after, fent an officer on board, to compliment me
on my arrival. In the afternoon, I waited upon him in per-
fon, accompanied by fome of my officers; and, before I
