H a v i n g arrived in the famous port o f Monterrey (To diftinguifhedc
by the Spaniards;). I waited on Sen1'- Quadra; who had taken up his re- Tuefday 26.
fidence at the governor’s houfe in the prefidio.. After the ufual compliments
had palled, and I had received repeated affuranees ofifriendlhip
and hofpitality, I returned on board, and at fun-rife the next morning Wednef. a-p-
the prefidio was faluted with thirteen guns; which being equally returned,
the topfails were hoifted, and Sen'- Quadra’s broad pendant faluted with
the fame number. After receiving the! return of this compliment, Sen'--
Quadra, accompanied by the afting; governor Sen'- Arguello, with Sen'-
Caamano, and feveral Spanifh officers, returned my vifit, all of whom
were received on board the Difeovery and Chatham with fuch marks o f
refpeft and ceremony as were due to their rank and lituation. When;
thefe formalities were over, I accompanied Sen'- Quadra on fhore to-
partake the entertainment o f his hofpitable table;
In the courfe of converfation Sen'- Quadra informed' me, that on his--
arrival in this, port from Nootka, he found orders direfting him to capture
all veffels he Ihould find engaged in commercial purfuits on this
eoaft, from thefe prefidios northward, to the extent where the-general
traffic is carried on.; excepting the veffels belonging to the people of
Great Britain, who were to proceed without the leaft interruption on
