THE American Cuckoo, as it-- name imports, is a native of thai
continent, that is to say, of the northern division of it, where it is a
common bird.
Tn this country four examples have occurred. One was shot in
Cornwall; another in Wales, in the autumn of 1832, on the estate of
Lord Cawdor. In Pembrokeshire near Stackpole Court, by Mr. Tracy.
His brother, -Mr. James Tracy, says, but rather irreconcilably. ' 1 first
noticed it on the top of an ash tree, in the act of feeding on some
small insects on the wing.' One near Youghall, in the county of Cork,
in the autumn of and another at Old Oonnaught, near Bray, in
the county of Wieklow, also in the autumn of 1832.
This bird frequents the retired glades and deep hollows of lonely
woods, the borders of solitary swamp-., and also orchards.
The \ellow-billed Cuckoo is a migratory bird, arriving from the
nunc southern parts in the more northern about the ¡2.hid. of April,
from whence it returns in the autumn.
It is a shy and solitary species. The female is remarkably attentive
to her nest, bo a s almost to allow herself to be taken with the hand,
and when roused feigns lameness after the manner of several other
bird-, fluttering and trailing her wings to endeavour to deco) any
stranger from the spot. The male keeps watch within view, and gives
an alarm by his note of the approach of any danger.
