YOUNG Oil GILSE.
The Fish represented on the accompanying Plate is the young or gilse state of a species or variety of Salmon Qot very
unfrequent in the Scotch rivets, particularly in those on the eastern side of the island, and known to fishermen under the
name of " Norway Sahnon." This Plato is given in succession with the last to shew the contrait ol'ibrm,—No. 11. shewing
altogether less elegance of shape, bemg a deeper fish, having all the members more strongly and miiscularly formed, and
having the tail much less forked at a neai'ly sunilar period of age. The specimen is from the river Tweed, and the colours
are darker and less doUcate in compai-ison with the first; which may ui part be attribuli-d to its being taken in tho Iresh
water, where, however, it could not have remained long, several specimens of Caligus being still affixed to it when caught.
