 LYCOPERDON  TUBER.  Linn.  
 TRUFFLES  are  found  in  various  parts  of  England,  
 always  under  ground.  They  are  frequently  fought  
 for by  dogs  in Hampiliire, Wiltihire, and Kent.  They  
 are  efteemed a dainty  infoups, and are  fold at Coventgarden  
 market  at a confiderable  price.  The  outfide  
 is  curioufly  corrugated  and  black.

 T H I S  TrufHe differs from the laft in having a hghtercoloured  
 and fmoother furface,  which  is  always  of  a  
 tawny  white.  As  an  article of  food,  its  qualities  are  
 much  the  fame as thofe  of the  preceding.

 Tins  Lycoperdon',  which  is often folitary, and  fomewhat  
 variable,  has  been  defcribed  under  various  fynonyras. 
   It  is  fometimes warty,  and  has  a  longifli  attenuated  
 ñem.  It  is  very  well  figured  in  Vaillant,  
 tab.  16.  7-  Batfch, tab.  42. has  figured  it  without  a  
 item,  and  with  the  root  immediately  fpringing  from  
 the  head,  as  in  one  of  my  figures.  His  feems to  be  
 taken  from  a  bleached  fpccimen  Vaillant,  tab.  16.  
 f g .  ^ and  6.  and fome of  Schieffer's  figures,  which  1 can  
 conlider  as  no  other  than  a variety  of  this  plant,  are  
 called  I'liber folidum  by  Dr. Withering,  3^  ed.  vol.  4.

 A  CURIOUS fpecies,  fimilar  in many  refpe£ls to L.  recoUigens. 
  figured at tab. 80. of  this  work,  from which  it  
 differs more particularly  in having  a fupport  or  ftalk  to  
 the  head  above the  volva,  which  however  is hardly  to  
 be  difcovered  in  the  recent  fpecimen,  on  account  of  
 the  great  thicknefs  of  the  volva  while  moift.  The  
 mouth  is  prominent,  and  generally  fringed.

 plant.  It differs from  the others  of  its  tribe  in  having  
 feveral orificesto emit the  powder,as well  as many  little  
 pillars  or  fupports  to  the  head  above  the  volva.
