Trichia varia, Rost. (figs. 169—172).
Sporangia scattered or aggregated, stipitate, or sessile on a
narrow or broad base, turbinate or subglobose, smooth, yellow,
dirty oohraceous or tinged with olive; stem when present
blackish; mass of capillitium and spores yellow; elaters cylindrical,
4— 5 g thick, spirals distant, prominent, more especially
on the convex side u’hen curved, rarely branched, tips smooth,
tapering, straight or bent, 8—10 g long, sometimes shorter; the
elaters are sometimes swollen at the commencement of the tapering
tip s ; spores globose, minutely warted, 10—14 g diameter.

A variable species, sometimes with a distinct, dark-coloured
stem, at others quite sessile on a narrow or broad base.
Characterized hy the cylindrical elaters with distant, prominent
spirals, and the minutely warted spores. In the specimen in
Rabenh., Fung. Eur., n. 2137, the warts show a slight tendency
to become elongated and flattened.
