T h e nostrils minute, but open.
T h e trunk. The neck and body cyl indr ical ; the latter swel l ing a l i t t l e about the middle,
tapers towards the tail, which is thick and short, ending in a sharp point.
T h e length, one foot one inch and three lines, of which the tail measures two inches
and seven lines.
T h e colour dark chesnut, intermixed on the upper part of the body, with waving
w h i t i s h doited lines, forming imperfect squares. The cheels and rostrum light, and there
is a collar of yel lowish white round the neck. Along the centre of the back there-are
twelve larger white irregular-shaped dots, each surrounded by a black margin. The
s c u t s yel low: one half of every third or fourth scuta chequered with black.

T h i s specimen is of nearly the same size with a specimen received from Tranquebar,
Scuta 180,) but the principal difference is in the colour and circular bands on the
Siiucmre 5 7 , ) trunk, which I never observed in young subjects on the Coast.
T h e length of this specimen is one foot two inches two lines.

Squama 3 3 ; tail broken.
T h e head oblong, ovate, a little broader than the neck. The first pair of lamins trigonal,
the second pair larger, and roundish. The shield-form lamina completely regular,
the lateral, narrow ; the semicordate pair large, with a whi t e speck on each.
T h e mouth rather large, without fangs. The eyes large, orbicular. The nostrils small,
vertical.
T h e trunk. The body swells and tapers inconsiderably; the round, thick, taper,
but had been broken.- The scales oval, and some rows on the back very slightly carinated.
T h e length, one foot four inches three lines. The broken tail measured three inches
two lines.
T h e colour. The head black, or very dark brown. The cheeks streaked with black.
T h e trunk striped. Along the ridge of the back, to the end of the tail, runs a black thread,
on each side of whi c h are two parallel broad fillets ; the one, a mixed cinereous brown,
tlie other black. The scuts white, edged with brownish black, giving (he appcarance of
so many cross bands ; but on the tail the bands are divided in the middle.

T h e head ovate, flat, thin. Two roundish lamina; between the nostrils ; the next pair
nearly square ; the shield lamina bell-form ; the semi-cordate pair obtuse.
T h e moidh of moderate size ; no fongs. A marginal row of teeth above. The eyes very
small, globular. The nostrils minute.
T h e trunk round ; swells and tapers proportionally; a little compressed about the
middle. The tail short, with a round point. The scales ovate, smooth.
T h e length, one foot seven inches. The tail, three inches and three quarters.
T h e colour, dark brown, freckled with dusk)', yellow, short, waving threads, which
form irregularly oval spots along the back. The belly, white.
