in g has been to the northward o f the observations; and that, b y about ten degrees on the whole traverse, when 1 7 degrees o f variation have been allowed. I t will hardly be supposed that the difference arises from allow in g to o much variation b y ten degrees; but it is singular, that the e r ro r should, in all cases but one, lie the same way. I do not b y any means regard the error as considerable, circumstances co n s id e r e d :* nor is it o f any consequence in the parts where the observations o f latitude serve to co r re ct it : as between Pisania and Jarra. M r . P a rk was plundered o f his sextant at Jarra, which accident o f course p u t an end to his observations o f latitude; and thus, unfortunately, left the remaining h a l f (very nearly) o f his geography in a state o f uncertainty, as to parallel. T h is point, therefore, must be regarded as the most advanced geographical station, that rests on any certain basis o f parallel. H ow e v e r , the remaining part o f the route will not appear to be much out, when it is’ seen how nearly the bearing o f Sego , as determined b y M r . P a rk , agreed with the line o f direction pointed out from Jarra. I t is} no doubt, a favourab le circumstance, that the instrument was not iost at an e ar lier period, and before the commencement o f the intricate route between the pass o f the Senegal r iv e r and J a r r a ; to which may be added, the advantage o f a known p a ra lle l, from whence to set o f f the v e ry important bearing o f T om b u c to o . In effect, the bearing was pointed out from Benowm, but this place being nearly east from Ja r ra, and the bearing in question E - N , no error o f any magnitude can be looked for. Ja rra (called also Ya r ra ), has already appeared in the maps drawn for the A s so c ia tion , and was o rigin a lly taken from M . Delisle’s M a p ; but was neglected, o r o v e r lo o k ed , b y M . D ’A n v ille . In the former m ap it was placed somewhat more to the west, and in a higher parallel by about £ o f a degree. Between Jarra and W a s s ib o o , Mr. P a rk ’ s reckoning, as it appears wrought up in his table o f d a y ’ s works, gives 41 min. diff. o f latitude N , and * Mr. Carmichael came within 6 or 7 degrees in the bearing between Aleppo and Bussorah, on a distance o f 720 British miles. But the advantages were prodigiously in bis favour; the road being straight, the country open, and the camel walking an equable pace. (See Phil. Trans, for 1791.) ,i° 3 1 ' diff. longitude E ; which reduced to departure, in miles, is 89, and produces a course o f E 26° S .
