T h a t fort is said to be in 14° 34 ', o r 9 min. north o f J o a g ; so that it Ought to lie to the north-west, rather than to the wes t: and ac cordingly,.there is found, in the map in L a b a t,* a place named G a c o u v a , no doubt meant fo r J o a g , on the S E o f St. Jo seph ; and in point o f distance answering to it. O th e r p laces in the same map o f L ab a t, are also re cogn ized in the route o f M r . I t will appear that the reckoning kept b y M r . P a rk g a v e 89 min. difference o f latitude between Pisania and J o a g , whilst the observation ga ve g o only. A b o u t 9 minutes may be p laced to the account o f excess o f distancey and 30 will then remain, on the whole distance o f 253 geographic miles. In other words, the dead reckoning, corrected b y allowing 1 7 degrees o f westerly variation, g a v e a course o f E a o °§ N , which, h ow e v e r , b y the observations o f latitude, is shewn to be E i i ° £ N (o r E b y N ) making a difference o f 9 J degrees. B u t this I regard as comin g v e ry near, considering the circumstances un der which the reckoning Was kep t. F rom J o a g we accompany M r . P a rk to Ko on iaka r ry and Jarra.
