It is difficult for any one who has not accurately studied the A rabic language, to imagine the many errors which an European commits in speaking it, when s e lf taught, o r even when taught in Europe. Soon after m y arriva l in A fr ica , when I had not attained the age o f eighteen, I happened one day to be in the house o f an European gentleman who had then been in the country twenty y e a r s ; an A rab o f the province o f T edla came in, when the former (at all times desirous o f exhibiting his knowledge o f their language) addressed him, and after making a long speech, the A ra b v e ry co o lly replied, “ I entreat thee to speak Arab ic, that I may understand thee (tkillem Eaudie b'lorbea besh en fh em ik ) ." T h is was interpreted to me by a friend, who was present, and it made such a strong impression on my mind, that I resolved to apply my se lf assiduously to discover the reason w h y a person who spoke the language tolerab ly quick, should be altogether so little understood, and I was some time afterwards, by «making various observations and
