no neceffity to affert the. former, hut that they mayeflually

Once in an Earth that came from. Eaftrlndia, I faw the
the perfect fhape where there
were not the leaft figns o f any Shelly j t f anjy iPetrife£tion at
a ll; it was a brownilh ftft Earth, arid indifferently friable ;
It was communicated to--me by MtjEdward:Ent$&^- to
Sr. George Ent, and formerly o f jW/roZ-College \n Oxford.
I have feen great variety ofFetrifaiStibns,' perform d by the
Sea-Water it felf; at Hagy Bar Hills in Lancajbire: The
Marie there Ihelves downwards, and feveral forts of Pebbles
are included in various Capfulte ; this Marie is converted
by the Sea-Water into a firm Grit, or Free-ftone, in fotne
pieces of which we find Shells, of Sea-Snails embalmed, and
thofenot in the leaft petrify’d. Confidbr we then this Petrifaction
o f Earth, and tho’. the Shell is often very minute
and tender, yet it ftill retains its ldentic Body ; I fay,
if we refled on this, it is not fo eafy to imagin (as fome
conceive) that after the Deluge the Petrifadion o f Shells
enfued with fueh facility; for in a multitude of Inftances,
here the Earth only, not the Shells have undergone that
change.
