that Herculean Diftemper, called a Spina Ventofa , 1 have; feen
the Scrophulous Glands of the Mefentery, impleted with a pellucid
Liquor, not unlike the White of an Egg, and fometimes
likeHoney, which no doubt proceeds from no other caufe than the
Serum made too Vifcid by its faline Particles, which then ftagnites
diftends and fwells up the infterftices of the Fibres, and thence
proceed their bignels, and hardnefs , this humour being fong
entertain’d, and lodged there, at length acquires fo high an A-
crimony, as by the perpetual Corrugations of the Fibres* they become
Cancerous, and very difficult, if not incurable, wherefore
in this Cafe, before the Patient is too much Emaciated, or tie He-
dick too far advanced, after the- common Method iM^ nöt. An-
fwer’d, it is prudent, as well as necellary to attempt a Salivation,
managed with great care, and difcretion,as to the Cutaneous Sero-
phules, occafion’d by a Vifcid Lympba , diftënding - the- Miliary
Glands; their Tumours are ufually foft, whiteb* rand without
pain, and common both in Young, and adult Ferfons, but are
by a gentle Salivation eafily removed ; In the Spina Ventofa in the
joints, or elfewhere, the Bone is Carious, and the Humour fo
Virulent, it fwells the Bone like an Honey-Comb, and fdthe-
times throws it off in Exfoliations, or by digefting it in a purulent
matter, this is feldom, or difficultly Cured, but often terminates
in a Confumption; I have known fome linger long in this Malady,
aduaf Cauteries apply’d to the Bones, and Salivation car-
ry’d on very regularly, and that too for no ffiort time, yet all

paffing it into the Orifice , wherefore to me it feems probable
fome potent Alkaly might be thought of to be of ferFice
