This tree is a native of- India or o f South America, and belongs to - the order of the Lylhrarieece. It attains the height o f p. m. forty feet. Its fine' flowers, either lilac, as on our' plate, or; o f a lighter colour, merging into pink, ’or almost white, are very .¿showy* resembling, at a distance, th^lilac trees o f Europe. It is a tree with thick-seffoliage but ephemeral, and the regular falling o f its leaves, deprives it of its beauty,'during a part o f the year. It is on the approach o f the rainy season that it shows itself in, afl-tihe splendour o f its luxuriant foliage and o f its magnificent bunches o f flowers. Its straight, but knotty, trunk, grows to a certain height before "it spreads its branches which are very tufted. The bark is of a dark brown colour; J ie stems are flexible and green, 'except- towards ¡their extremities, whefe they are o f ,a purplish or reddish-brown. The leaves are alternate, pelioled, stipulate, ova']'- • acuminate, with ramefied venation and o f a beautiful dark, glossy, green colour. The flowers o f mrdllary inflorescence., grow in’ compound racemes, with calyx inferior, monosepalous, cleft, 6-parted, regular, cup-formed, reflexed, permanent, persistent.; — and corolla polypetalous, regular, rosaceous, with crisped or crumpled lamina. The stamens are indefinite, p'erigynous, free. The anthers are 2-celled, globular. The pistil is mohocarpelled. The ovary, simple and free, is many- seeded and the seeds are winged. • The timber of the Lagei'stroemia r e g id fis remarkably solid and fit for building.' It is chiefly used for the construction of skiffs and is sold at a high price. On the East-coast of: ■Sumatra, in the vicinity o f Palembang, immense forests o f this tree are found in "marshy places. It is said; that the seeds-possess a narcotic principle. Les tiges sont flexibles et vertes, excepté vers l'extrémité où elles sont d’un brun pourpré ou rougeâtres. Les feuilles sont alternes, pétiolées, stipulées, à nervures rameuses, d’un beau veri foncé'luisant, oblongues e t acuminées. À inflorescence en grappes composées, les fleurs monoïques ont un calice monosépale, fendu, mullifide, régulier, cupuli- forme, réfléchi? adhérent, persistant, et une corolle polypélaie, régulière, rosacée à lame crêpée ou .chiffonnée-. Les étamines sont indéfinies, périgynes et libres. Les anthères sont hiloculaires, globuleuses. Le pistil est monocarpellé. L’ovaire, simple et libre, -est-pluri-ovulé et les graines sont ailées. Le bois de la Làgerstroernia regia, qui se vend fort cher, e s t d’une solidité remarquable, ot il est propre à la construction. On s’en sert surtout pour la construction des. esquifs. Sur la côie méridionale de Sumatra, dans les environs de Palembang, on rencontre, dans lés endroits marécageux, d'immenses forêts de cet arbre. On attribue à ses graines, un principe narcotique.
